“Sitting together at the table of Jesus – this something that will surely happen in the Kingdom of God, but I really hope that we live to see it become a reality in this earthly life” – this was one of the thoughts shared by the President of the Synod of the Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran Church, when 2020 was declared the year of the Eucharist on the occasion of the organisation of the International Eucharistic Congress. Károly Hafenscher graduated as a Lutheran minister in 1980, after which he went on to obtain a university degree in choir conducting. He served as a minister in Keszthely, Csengőd, Szekszárd, as well as in the Lutheran community of Budavár. Currently he is President of the Synod of the Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Director of the Ordass Lajos Lutheran Educational Centre. Hafenscher – a Lutheran minister, a theologian and a professor – never gave up teaching, of course: he continues to work as an associate lecturer both at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and the Evangelical-Lutheran Theological University of Budapest.
