God Always Takes Care of the Dough

25 May 2020
With the lead of Levente Serfőző, the educational vicar, catechetical and youth referent, a pilgrim group took the road to Óföldeák on 23, May.

Water pours from a well in Óföldeák. A small group of 15 stands around it with bottles. The people are tired, everyone is happy while drinking the cold water. They took the road early in the morning from the Cathedral of Szeged. They took the ferry on Tisza and walked 26 kilometres with their leader, Levente Serfőző. The joy of arrival lit their faces. The text printed on their T-shirts is the motto of the International Eucharistic Congress: ’… All My Springs Are In You’.
One year ago, there was a beautiful sunshine, but then Óföldeák was full of people. Almost 1000 participants took part on the pilgrimage which meant a 6-km-long walk in the previous two years. The program was organised by the educational vicar of the diocese, as a part of NEK’s spiritual preparations.
This year, as so many other things as well, the pilgrimage was also transformed due to the pandemic which meant that only a few people could attend the event. They are the ones who took in to walk the long, 26 kilometre-long road, representing hundreds of others, praying and singing on the way and confirming that we can not give up, because when we step out of our comfortzone and do something nobel and good, it will pay off thousandfold..

’Let’s take the road to draw life’, says the motto of the pilgrimage. And thus fifteen people set sail. In their souls, all of them took the hands of ten more people who stayed at home and led them in this huge, invisible net on every step of the 26 kilometres.
Some say that no matter how long a road is, no step is wasted as each of them leads us closer to our aim and further from where we come. On this pilgrimage this small group of people, or rather these thousand pilgrims got closer to something bigger, something mightier. Those who were physically present could see the church of Óföldeák and could take part on the mass as well. However, in these past few months it turned out many times that we don’t have to be physically present – it’s enough if we are there spiritually. Because our heart and soul can become one with God anywhere. And there is no greater power than this.

In Hungarian folk tales the magical horse always asks his master whether they should fly as fast as the wind or as fast as the thoughts. It always flies like the thoughts and gets to the place where the hero has to go in a whim. Although a pilgrimage like this does not happen in a minute, we can get to the place where we can meet ourselves and God in our hearts. Of course, He is there when we take the first steps, He walks with us on the asphalt, gives shadow under the trees, warmth with the Sun and water from the well. He takes care of us –
the dough.
Yes. God always takes care of the dough – this was the message Levente Serfőző led us on our way.
