The goodbye round of applause

The 72 years of Giuseppe Berardelli passed away of COVID-19 in a hospital of Loverei, after he had chosen to give his respirator -received from his worshippers in the town of Casnigo- to another coronavirus patient. He was all smiles and love, while the last amazing gesture of his helpful life was this self-sacrifice.
Giuseppe Berardelli was the archpriest of Casnigo for 14 years. As the previous Mayor of Casnigo said: the Father „ was a simple, straightforward person, with a great kindness and helpfulness towards everyone, believers and non-believers alike. He had always been kind to everyone, listened to everyone whoever turned to him, was ready and willing to help either the city authorities or the various organisations, and not only the ones operating at the Parish, while attended all the events without ever being intrusive. He was extremely discreet, even before funerals in the mortuary he kept asking the relatives whether they mind having him around. Everybody loved him, many came to see him from his previous parish even long years after his leaving. He had a special ability to obtain financial resources when it was needed, he well knew which doors to knock on. He had shrines to be restored and founded the Don Bosco oratorio.”
So was recalling a healthcare worker: „I was deeply overwhelmed that Father Giuseppe Berardelli, the priest of Casnigo – whose parish community had acquired a respirator – decided to refuse the respirator so that a younger patient could have one.”
He was 72 years old. It has been already a year that he was struggling with a disease. Yet, his face was always smiling, he was determined and entrusted himself to God. He died of coronavirus in the hospital of Loverei. He was badly in need of a respirator, still he gave up on it – yes, this is what the best characterized this generous priest, who had enchanted the whole city with his kindness. „He was a priest who listened to everyone, he knew how to listen, whoever turned to him knew that he could count on his help. I remember him always arriving by his much loved old Guzzi motorbike. He has never stopped being cheerful, enthusiastic while bringing peace and joy to our communities” – said Clara Poli, mayor of Fiorano, where the Father had once been a parish priest. She added, that it was Berardelli, who succeeded and managed to open in Fiorano the house of assistance for the families and young people being in need.
