CEBU (Agencies): Pope Francis announced on January 31, the last day of the Eucharistic Congress in Cebu, The Philippines, that the next gathering will be hosted by Budapest in Hungary in 2020.
The pope made the announcement in a taped video shown to the hundreds of thousands of people gathered for the closing Mass of the congress at the South Road Properties in Cebu City, CBCP News reported.
"I am happy to announce that the next International Eucharistic Congress will take place in 2020 in Budapest, Hungary," Pope Francis said, as a thunderous applause erupted at the gathering.
Hungarian flags were seen waving in the crowd.
It will be the second time that the congress has been held in Hungary. The first was also in Budapest in 1938, just one year after Manila became the first city in Asia to hold the event. It is now held every four years.
